Home relief for dry cough

Cough is the reflex action of clearing the throat from mucus and other irritants that may be caused by viral infection or problems in the lungs, an asthma attack or tuberculosis.

Some of the symptoms that you have or might have cough is having itchy throat, chest pain and congestion.  Persistent coughing is very irritable and sometimes embarrassing to others specially if it happens in a crowded or quiet place.

There are two types of coughs, the dry and productive coughs. Productive cough is one with phlegm or mucus while coughing. While common dry coughing is caused by itchy throat or allergies.

Persistent coughing needs medical attention to prevent it from anymore lung or throat damages.  But for simple dry cough, there are home products that you can try to ease your dry cough.

Here are some home products that you can try as a relief to your dry cough:

  • GINGER – one of the best known home medicine for cough. Cut a fresh ginger and chew it for a few minutes.  You can also make it into a tea if you cant stand the strong taste of ginger. Chop the ginger into fine pieces add water and boil. Add teaspoon of honey into your cup of ginger tea for taste.

  • TURMERIC - like the healing properties of ginger, turmeric is a home favorite medicine for cough. Add a half spoon of turmeric powder in a cup of hot water and gargle it. You can also put a half spoon of turmeric into your hot milk for a quick relief of your dry cough. You can also try mixing turmeric powder with honey and take it three to four times a day. Like ginger, turmeric can also be made into a tea just add honey or lemon to taste.

  • GARLIC – because of its antimicrobial properties, garlic comes second to ginger for cough relief. Saute a clove of peeled garlic and it helps prevent coughs and colds. Try adding more garlic into your hot soup when you take it.

  • HONEY – soothes the throat and helps not to irritate the throat lining. Try adding more honey to your hot drink and try to drink it three times a day.

  • THYME – the antimicrobial prorperties of this medicinal herb has been used for centuries for some diseases. Drinking thyme tea relaxes the muscles in your throat and open up the airways to ease the discomfort caused by dry coughing. Put a handful of thyme into the water then boil it.  Add honey or lemon to your cup of tea thyme for taste.
